Coach’s choice: Four places to run in Greene County

It’s a beautiful day outside in Springfield. Your shoes are laced up and ready to go. There’s only one problem. You have no idea where you want to run.

Jamie Moreno can help. The head coach for the Drury University cross-country and track-and-field teams shared places locally he takes his teams to run as well as some of his own personal favorite places to run.

1. Phelps Grove Park

“Phelps Grove is a beautiful local park, in a really great spot for anyone that lives in the Drury/Missouri State University area,” he says.

The park is directly behind MSU’s campus, separated by an often busy intersection. “The team often either runs at or through the park to get some grass in on their runs, but we do sometimes do workouts at Phelps. It’s a nice park and it’s really close.”

Phelps Grove Park, open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., is at 950 E. Bennett St. in Springfield.

2. Frisco Highline Trail (Springfield)

“A winding 35-mile paved trail, the Frisco Highline Trail is a lovely place to get out and go for a run,” Moreno says.

The paved trail is serene, calm, and alive with the sounds of nature. The thicket of trees helps to block wind while you walk, jog, or run. “I sometimes take the team out there for longer runs because of the paved path and the nice change of scenery,” he says.

The trail is on West Kearney Street in Springfield.

3. Frisco Highline Trail (Willard Trailhead)

A part of the winding Frisco Highline Trail, this trailhead is a short drive away in the neighboring town of Willard. The trail is paved and gravel, with small instances of street crossings or sidewalks. There is also a gas station and restaurant at the trail’s head.

“I take the team out to this portion of the trail for our long runs, which, depending on the season, range upwards from 10 to 15 miles.”

The trailhead is at 211 E. Jackson St. in Willard.

4. Nathanael Greene Park

Across the street from Horton Smith Golf Course lies Nathanael Greene Park. Open from 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, Nathanael Greene is a beautiful park complete with botanical gardens, picnic areas, a lake, and a butterfly house.

The park comes complete with paved trail roads for walking, biking, or running, a beautiful and serene place to both commune with nature while working up a sweat.

Nathanael Greene Park is at 2400 S. Scenic Ave. in Springfield.
