How to become a social media advocate for a non-profit

A social media advocate is someone who promotes a cause on different media platforms. This is a great way to get involved with a non-profit organization. Many local non-profits need people who can help them build strong social media platforms. Luckily, many young students are looking for opportunities to volunteer. Hannah Minchow-Proffitt, a graduate assistant at Drury University’s Office of Community Outreach and Leadership Development, recognizes the role social media plays for these groups and how it contributes to their success.  The Scoop sat down with Minchow-Proffitt to put together a list of seven steps to help you find a non-profit organization and volunteer to become a social media advocate for them.

1. Start with a process of self-reflection

Figure out what your passions, interests, skills and goals are. Gear those toward an organization that is aligned with them. You will have a better experience volunteering with an organization that is passionate about the same things you are.

 

2. Do some research

Visit www.drury.edu/volunteer and navigate to the “service opportunities” tab and then the “find a community partner” tab. This page has a link to a directory that is operated by the Greene County Library system. In this directory, there is an annual up-to-date list of all of the non-profit organizations in Springfield. There, you can search by subject or keyword in order to find a list of organizations that fit your interests.

 

 

3. Know how to use different social media platforms

If you want to be a social media advocate, it’s very important to have an understanding of how to use multiple social media platforms. Make sure you’re educated on the platforms that your chosen organization uses.

 

4. Have an authentic voice

Convey the proper voice to keep the organization’s professionalism and authenticity.

 

5. Keep up to date on social and political climates

Social media is a constant conversation. It is important to keep up with current events that are related to the organization. Post about these events to keep the organization’s platforms interesting and relatable.

 

6. Talk with the organization about the volunteer work they need related to social media

Being a social media advocate can mean different things depending on the organization. Some non-profits want volunteers who will have direct management of their accounts and others allow volunteers to send in post ideas. Many organizations are looking for young, bright minds to help them build their social media accounts to reach more people. Talk with the organization and let them know that you are well versed with social media and are interested in helping out!

 

7. Use your own social media circles to promote their cause

Even if the organization is not looking for direct volunteers, you can still share information about them which can be very helpful. If you do become a direct volunteer over their social media platforms, be sure to share the information on your personal account to encourage more engagement.

 

Following these steps will allow you to find the perfect organization to volunteer with in order to give back to the Springfield community. It will also give you an opportunity to strengthen your skills on social media, a rising technique in today’s world.
